Waimea Canyon on Kauai
A trip to Kauai west side will bring you to the amazing Waimea Canyon, a canyon so stunning that Mark Twain named it “Big Canyon of the Pacific”. The geology of the Waimea Canyon is valuable of note because of the uniqueness of its structure. It was not only made by the ongoing erosion of the rocks and the forcing in of the Eaimea River, as many canyons are, but was also designed in part by the dramatic collapse of t he volcano that formed the Kauai island, more than four million years ago. The surrounding cliffs of the canyon are actually made from the early lava flows from this volcano. The naked basalt rocks are what give the canyon its specialty rusty red colour. The Waimea Canyon is 3,500 feet deep, 1 mile wide and 14 mile long and offer amazing panoramic views for your baby which can be best seen from quite a few look out points, adding Kalalau lookout –from here rugged crags, crested buttes, and deep valley gorges can be seen. The canyon is top reached from the big road, Waimea Canyon Drive, which provides awe-amazing views en route.
